A ring avulsion is a sudden, forceful pull on a ring that has caught on something while the body keeps moving. It is not a cut: the ring drags on the finger itself. Cleveland Clinic (2022) lists “workplace accidents, falls and sports injuries” as the most common causes, and says anyone who works with their hands around machinery or other equipment has a higher risk.
Falls are the part most ring advice skips. A slip from a ladder or a scaffold is exactly the moment a hand grabs for a rung or a rail.
Heavy equipment work has its own documented case. A 2021 case report by Horn in Clinical Practice and Cases in Emergency Medicine describes a 41-year-old heavy machine operator whose wedding band was caught in machinery; he sustained “a circumferential degloving injury” to his left ring finger. OSHA’s amputation guidance (OSHA 3170-02R, 2007) makes the wider point that clothing, jewelry and even gloves “can get entangled in moving machine parts.”
