Custom Engagement Rings: 8 Design Services Compared

Verified with 34 sources

RingReel may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Picks come from our research, never from payment. How we make money

Custom engagement rings are ordered as a service rather than picked off a shelf, so the thing to compare is the service: what each jeweler lets you change, whether you approve a render before the ring is made, how long it takes, what it starts at, and whether you can send it back. That last question is where buyers get hurt, because the terms swing from a 30-day refund with no custom exclusion published at Rare Carat to Brilliant Earth, where “Custom orders are non-refundable, non-exchangeable, and cannot be cancelled”. Our top pick is CustomMade, the only service here that makes you approve the ring twice, once as a 3D rendering and again as photographs of the finished piece before it ships.

The Eight Custom Engagement Ring Services, Reviewed

Best overall

CustomMade Custom Ring Design

by CustomMade

Best for: A ring designed from a blank page, with two approval gates before it reaches you.

3D renderings after a deposit, then photographs of the finished piece for a second approval before it ships, and 2 to 4 weeks of production once the design is final.

What we like

  • Two approval steps, not one: you sign off the 3D rendering and then photographs of the finished ring before it ships
  • They will design to a stated budget and say so in writing
  • Free resizing once within 365 days, and further adjustments usually $75 or less

Keep in mind

  • No refund policy is published at all, so a remake is the only published way out
  • The deposit for the 3D modeling stage is not a published figure
  • Their terms cap total liability at $100 and grant them the right to reuse your design

Best return terms

Rare Carat Bespoke Design Service

by Rare Carat

Best for: The only custom service here whose published returns policy does not carve custom out.

Renderings for final approval typically within 2 to 3 days, one to two design revisions included, and 4 to 6 weeks from first design to finished ring.

What we like

  • The 30-day full refund is stated without a custom exclusion, which is rare in this category
  • They publish a revision count, which most sellers do not
  • Renderings come back in 2 to 3 days, the fastest design turnaround we found

Keep in mind

  • They will not set an heirloom or outside stone: the diamond has to be theirs
  • Their terms of service reserve the right to specify different return terms in writing before shipping, so get yours confirmed
  • They will not copy an existing design
Price range
Custom design rings start at $1,500 (checked 11/09/2026)

Best for a lab-grown center stone

With Clarity Custom Engagement Ring Design

by With Clarity

Best for: A custom ring around a lab-grown center stone, where their return window is not excluded.

A complimentary 3D rendering before you pay, with one complimentary revision, and a stated ship time after approval that their own two pages do not agree on.

What we like

  • The rendering comes before you pay, not after
  • They publish a revision count in their policy, which most sellers do not
  • Engraving on an engagement ring is complimentary, subject to space

Keep in mind

  • Their own two pages contradict each other: the custom page says every custom ring is returnable, the policy page excludes custom pieces made with natural diamonds
  • Only one complimentary revision, despite the marketing promise to keep revising
  • You must buy the center stone from them, and a center stone is never covered by the warranty
Price range

Their policy page excludes custom jewelry crafted with natural diamonds, and excludes any item sent for resizing even inside the 30 days. Once a design is approved and paid for it cannot be canceled or changed. One free resize within 30 days plus a shipping fee. • One named team member handles the whole brief, and the quote comes back within 24 hours

Best moissanite custom

MoissaniteCo Custom Design Service

by MoissaniteCo

Best for: A custom setting built around moissanite, from a seller that publishes how many rounds of CAD it really takes.

Multi-angled CAD renderings emailed for approval and revised until the design matches your specification, with about a week of design and 2 to 3 weeks of production, and no rush service.

What we like

  • They publish a revision statistic: 90% of custom orders are approved by the second set of edited CAD renderings
  • The CAD stage is central and included once the down payment is made
  • The down payment to start is the lowest of any bespoke service here

Keep in mind

  • Custom is final sale, and the CAD fee is gone whether or not you go ahead
  • The warranty runs 12 months, not for life, and excludes chipping or scratching the stone
  • Engraving and resizing prices are not published
Price range
Not stated for the ring; the down payment is typically $75 to $100 per ring (checked 11/09/2026)

Custom orders are final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged, and the custom design and CAD fees are not refunded even if you cancel before completion. Special order items carry a 20% cancellation fee. Resizing is possible but usually means re-engraving. The warranty is 12 months against manufacturing defects, not lifetime, and does not cover damage to the stones

Widest diamond choice

Blue Nile Special Orders

by Blue Nile

Best for: Modifying one of their designs around a diamond from one of the largest online inventories.

Computer-aided design is offered as a service with a non-refundable fee and two complimentary revisions, but you pay in full before the design is reviewed, and production runs approximately 8 to 12 weeks.

What we like

  • They publish a revision count, two complimentary revisions with the CAD service
  • A very large diamond inventory to build the modification around
  • The limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects is not withdrawn for a special order

Keep in mind

  • All special-order sales are final: no return, no refund, no exchange, and no cancellation once approved
  • Custom orders are also excluded from the free resizing service, so a wrong size has no free remedy
  • You must pay in full before their team reviews and approves the design, and the CAD fee itself is not refundable

Best for a stone you already own

Rustic and Main Custom Ring Design

by Rustic and Main

Best for: A diamond or gemstone you already own, set by a maker that publishes its whole process.

A nonrefundable design deposit buys a CAD model and mockups, a 3D printed ring is available on request, revisions are expected, and production takes several weeks.

  • The clearest published process of any seller here, and the only one offering a 3D printed model of the design
  • They will set a stone you already own, which four of the big retailers refuse
  • Their returns page states exactly which rings are final sale and which are not, fee by fee

Keep in mind

  • The design deposit is not refundable once design work has started
  • No starting price for a custom ring is published anywhere
  • Production is described only as several weeks, with no committed date

What We Left Out

How We Chose

Can a Custom Engagement Ring Be Returned?

An open shipping box with tissue paper, an empty gray velvet ring box, a printed form and a pen laid out on pale linen

The honest answer is that “custom” tells you nothing about your rights, and the proof is in the search results themselves. Greenwich St. Jewelers, the first organic result for this search, states that “Made-to-order, custom-made, or sized engagement ring purchases are final sale and may not be returned or exchanged”. RockHer, two places below it, advertises the opposite on a ring that is also made to order: “a 40 day return window, complimentary 60 day resizing, and a lifetime warranty”.

Both statements are true, and both describe a ring built after you ordered it. The word on the label is the same. The rights are not.

SellerReturn a custom piece? In their own wordsResizing a custom piece
Brilliant EarthNo”Custom orders are non-refundable, non-exchangeable, and cannot be cancelled”Possible within a year, “subject to fees”, and outside the free resize service
Blue NileNo”all special-order sales are final”Excluded from free resizing along with engraved items
Do AmoreNo”Custom orders are not returnable, exchangeable, or cancellable”Free for life, custom pieces included, you pay the shipping
MoissaniteCoNo”Custom orders are final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged”Possible, but “in most cases, it would require that the ring be engraved again”; price not stated
Rustic and MainNoCustom designs and rings “made with materials you provided” are listed under “Final Sale (applies to all rings)“Free within 60 days on a custom engagement ring
Staghead DesignsNo”A ring is considered custom if it differs in any way from the original listing”One free resize if their sizing kit was bought
Rockford CollectionNo”All custom orders are final sale”Size exchange only, within 14 days, at a fee of $450 to $875 or more
Greenwich St. JewelersNo”final sale and may not be returned or exchanged”One complimentary resizing
With ClarityIts two pages disagree”Absolutely. With Clarity backs every custom ring with a free 30-day return policy” against “Custom jewelry crafted with natural diamonds” in the not-eligible listOne free within 30 days, but “Items that have been submitted for resizing” lose the return
CustomMadeNo refund policy is publishedThe published remedy is a remake: “if your ring doesn’t feel right, we’ll remake it” within 30 daysOnce free within 365 days, later adjustments usually no more than $75
Rare CaratNo custom exclusion published”Every Rare Carat order can be returned within 30 days of the shipment date for a full refund”Once free in the first year, but “Once something’s sent in for resizing, it can’t be returned”
Manly BandsNo custom exclusion published”You have 30 days from the date of delivery to return your ring for a full refund”No resizing service; one size exchange inside 30 days
RockHerYes”a 40 day return window, complimentary 60 day resizing, and a lifetime warranty”Complimentary 60-day resizing

Final Sale Is Common, but It Is Not Universal

Of the sellers above, eight make a custom piece final sale outright. Blue Nile goes further than the rest: “Once we approve your custom design and collect the payment, we cannot accept cancellations and changes”. Staghead Designs sets the widest definition of custom of anyone checked, counting a change to band width or an added engraving as enough to trigger it, and adds that “Custom orders cannot be canceled at any time”.

Against that, two sellers publish a return window with no custom carve-out in it. Rare Carat’s policy states a full refund within 30 days of shipment with no restocking fees, and never names custom as an exception. Note the limit, though: their terms of service reserve the right to set different terms “in writing prior to shipping”, so the sentence to get from them is the one about your ring.

When a Seller Contradicts Itself

With Clarity is the clearest case. Their custom engagement ring page asks “Are custom engagement rings returnable?” and answers “Absolutely”, while their policies page lists “Custom jewelry crafted with natural diamonds, whether lab certified or non-certified” among items that are not eligible for return. Read together, the returnable custom ring is the one built around a lab-grown stone. If you want a natural diamond from them, ask for the return terms in writing before you approve anything.

CustomMade is a different problem: there is no refund policy to contradict. The word refund does not appear on their home, how-it-works, guarantee, warranties, terms or legal pages, and their Retail Terms of January 2022 contain no returns clause. What they publish instead is a remake: “if your ring doesn’t feel right, we’ll remake it” free of charge within 30 days. That is a real remedy, and it is not a refund.

Engraving and Resizing Are the Cheapest Ways to Lose a Return

Engraving is the single change most likely to turn a returnable ring into a final sale. Blue Nile excludes engraved items from both returns and free resizing. Brilliant Earth will take an engraved ring back but charges from $40 to remove the engraving, and more to exchange it. Staghead counts an added engraving as custom, which makes the whole ring final sale.

Resizing does the same quietly. Rare Carat states that once a ring is sent in for resizing it can no longer be returned, and With Clarity excludes any item submitted for resizing even inside the 30-day window. Get the size right first: our guide to the average ring size for women covers measuring, and engagement rings for small fingers covers what happens at the small end of the range.

What the Warranty Still Covers

Losing the return does not usually mean losing the warranty. Brilliant Earth’s free lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects is offered “on all Brilliant Earth fine jewelry” with no custom carve-out, Blue Nile keeps its limited lifetime warranty on a special order, and Do Amore backs custom pieces with a limited lifetime warranty plus free resizing, repolishing and cleaning.

Read the exclusions, because they are where these warranties stop. Brilliant Earth excludes wear and tear, lost gemstones, loss and theft. With Clarity’s warranty covers custom jewelry but states that “Center stone diamonds and gemstones on engagement rings are also not covered”, which on an engagement ring is the expensive part. MoissaniteCo’s cover runs 12 months rather than for life and excludes chipping or scratching the stone. And every one of them is void if another jeweler works on the ring.

The Proof Step Before Your Ring Is Made

A tablet on a jeweler's bench showing a gray 3D wireframe of a ring setting, beside a printed technical drawing of the same design, a pencil and tweezers

A custom ring is bought before it exists, so the render you approve is the only description of it that is not a conversation. Who gives you one, when, and at what price is the second thing this page compares.

Who Shows You a Render, and When

The order matters more than the file format. With Clarity produces “realistic 3D renderings of your ring so you can see exactly how it will look before we create it”, and states that the rendering comes before payment. Rare Carat shares renderings “typically within 2-3 days” and includes one to two revisions. MoissaniteCo sends multi-angled CAD renderings and revises them until the design meets your specification, then publishes the unusual statistic that most orders are approved by the second edited set. Do Amore sends renderings a few days after the order is placed.

Brilliant Earth is the outlier among the big names: their computerized model is produced “once your initial concept is finalized and an order is placed”. Blue Nile is stricter still, because you “must pay in full to finalize your design” and their team then reviews and approves it. CustomMade is the most generous, adding a second gate that nobody else publishes: photographs of the finished piece “so you can give us your seal of approval before we ship it to you”. Rustic and Main will go one better on request and send a 3D printed ring based on the CAD you chose.

What a Render Can and Cannot Tell You

A CAD image is a technical drawing, not a photograph of your ring. Rustic and Main say so plainly: “these CAD mock up images aren’t the final product. They’re a technical tool that shows the raw design before polishing and before the stones are set”. CustomMade sets the same expectation from the other end, warning that hand finishing means “you may notice small differences between your final piece and the CAD renderings shown during design. This is part of the handmade process”.

So use the render for what it proves: proportions, the height of the setting, the width of the band, the position of accent stones. It will not settle how a diamond faces up, which depends on the stone. Our engagement ring shapes guide covers what each outline does in the metal, and the bezel setting guide covers the setting choice a render is worst at conveying.

The Point of No Return

Every service has a moment after which your money is committed, and it is in a different place at each one. At With Clarity it is approval: “Once a design is approved through the computer animated design process and paid for, the order may not be cancelled or changed”. At Blue Nile it is before approval, because payment in full is what submits the design. At MoissaniteCo the design and CAD fees “are non-refundable, even if the custom order is canceled before completion”, and a canceled special order carries a 20% fee. At Rustic and Main the design fee stops being refundable “once design work has commenced”.

Ask one question before you pay anything: what exactly is refundable today, and what stops being refundable tomorrow.

What You Can Actually Change

Seven loose clear gemstones in different outlines, including round, oval, pear, cushion and emerald cuts, arranged on a gray velvet tray beside a jeweler's loupe and a polishing cloth

Custom covers two different products. A builder is a configurator with a fixed menu, usually free to use and instant. A bespoke service starts from a brief, charges a design fee and gives you a render to approve. Most disappointment in this category comes from buying the first while expecting the second.

Design Your Own Engagement Ring Online

Online builders are free to use, and every result on the first page for this search is one: shops and configurators, with no article among them. What they change is the setting and the stone from a fixed catalog, which is why they return a finished price instantly. Blue Nile’s builder shows settings from $1,250, and its genuinely custom route is a separate special-order service with a CAD fee attached. The useful line to hold is this: configuring a listed setting online is not the same transaction as commissioning a design, and only one of the two comes with a render and a design fee.

Custom Diamond Engagement Rings

If the center stone is a diamond, the seller’s stone policy decides most of the design. Brilliant Earth, With Clarity, Blue Nile and Rare Carat all require the diamond to be theirs, and Rare Carat states custom rings are “only available with diamonds purchased from Rare Carat”. Whether the stone is lab-grown or natural can change your rights too, not just your bill: With Clarity’s exclusion list names custom jewelry made with natural diamonds specifically. Our lab grown vs natural diamond comparison covers the material and grading side of that choice, which is the same whether the ring is custom or not.

Custom Moissanite Engagement Rings

Two of the services here publish a real moissanite design process. MoissaniteCo lets you set the center stone shape, size and type, the metal, the side stones and the size, and revises the CAD until you approve it. Do Amore takes a brief in moissanite or diamond from a photo, a link or a sketch. Both make a custom moissanite ring final sale, so the render is your only inspection. Charles and Colvard, the name most associated with the material, publishes no custom design service at all.

Can You Use Your Own Diamond or an Heirloom Stone?

This is the request that most often gets refused. Brilliant Earth states flatly that it “does not set gemstones from outside sources”, and Rare Carat will not take heirloom or sentimental stones either. With Clarity requires a center stone purchased from them and does not take setting-only orders, and Blue Nile builds special orders around its own diamonds. Rustic and Main is the exception in this list: “we can source it for you, or we can work with a stone you already have”. If the stone is the whole point of the ring, choose the jeweler by that answer before anything else.

Styles People Ask for by Name

Unique Custom Engagement Rings

Unique is what every custom service sells, so it is worth knowing what it actually buys you. Two of the sellers checked reserve the design itself: Brilliant Earth “retains the full unrestricted rights to all jewelry designs, whether custom or standard, and may choose to market or sell jewelry based on such designs”, and Staghead Designs states that all custom designs they craft are their property and that they do not offer exclusivity on new designs. CustomMade’s legal terms take a similar right over “any design suggestions or feedback that you provide”. None of that stops the ring being one of a kind on your hand, but a ring that is unique to you is not automatically unique in the catalog.

Vintage and Antique-Style Custom Engagement Rings

A vintage-style commission is a brief, not a product category, and the jewelers who take it want three specifics: the era, the outline of the center stone and the detail you actually want copied, such as a milgrain edge or an open gallery. That work almost always lands in the bespoke track rather than a builder, because no configurator carries period detailing. Brilliant Earth’s published list of what it will make covers the adjacent shapes, from gemstone rings to signet rings and bridal sets, and Rare Carat draws one firm line worth knowing in advance: they will not copy an existing design.

Starting Prices, Design Deposits and CAD Fees

Three of the eight publish a starting price and five do not, which makes the fee column the more useful one. The fee is what you lose if the design does not work out, and it behaves differently at each seller: Rustic and Main’s deposit goes toward the ring but is not refundable once design work starts; MoissaniteCo’s down payment is the lowest entry cost here but the CAD fee is gone even if you cancel before completion; Blue Nile charges a CAD fee whose amount it does not publish. Quotes also expire. Brilliant Earth holds one for five business days “due to fluctuating market prices”, Blue Nile for two weeks, With Clarity for thirty days.

Affordable Custom Engagement Rings

Honest answer first: no service on this page publishes a starting price below $1,200, and none of them starts in the hundreds. If the budget is tight, the money is better spent on the stone than on the process, and the cheaper routes are the ones that skip the design fee entirely. With Clarity and Do Amore publish no upfront design cost, and CustomMade states it designs “with your budget in mind” and will price options before anything is committed. For what couples actually spend on a ring of any kind, our average engagement ring cost guide has the survey figures.

Is a Custom Ring Cheaper Than Buying One Ready-Made?

Usually not, and the reasons are published. A design fee, a CAD charge and hand labor all sit on top of the metal and the stone, and none of them exist on a ring already in the case. What custom does buy is control over where the money goes: a simpler setting around a better stone, or the reverse, instead of whatever ratio the catalog happened to pick. Treat a custom quote as the price of a ring that does not compromise, not as a discount.

Matching Custom Wedding Bands

A custom engagement ring and the band that will sit beside it are usually two orders, and the second one is where the final-sale rules bite hardest, because a contoured band is custom by definition at several of these sellers. MoissaniteCo publishes the trap explicitly: a matching band purchased separately from the engagement ring counts as a custom order and is therefore final sale. If you know you want a shaped band, ask about it during the engagement ring design, while the CAD for the ring still exists. Our comparison of custom wedding ring services covers that side in full.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does a Custom Engagement Ring Usually Cost?

Published entry points run from $1,200 to $2,000, and several sellers quote every job instead of naming a figure. On top of the ring sit the fees: a design deposit, a CAD charge, or a down payment before any drawing starts. Budget for the center stone separately, since it usually costs more than the setting and the labor together.

Is It Cheaper to Get a Custom Engagement Ring?

Usually not. A design fee, a CAD charge and hand labor sit on top of the metal and the stone, and none of that applies to a ring already in a case. Custom saves money only when it removes what you do not want, such as a smaller center stone in a setting built for it.

How Long Does It Take to Customize an Engagement Ring?

Four to six weeks is the most common published figure, quoted by Brilliant Earth and Rare Carat. Blue Nile says approximately eight to twelve weeks for a special order, while Do Amore and MoissaniteCo quote two to three weeks of making once renderings are approved. Order early: none of these clocks starts until the design is signed off.

Can You Return an Engagement Ring if She Doesn’t Like It?

Not if it was made to order at most of these sellers. Brilliant Earth, Blue Nile, Do Amore, MoissaniteCo and Rustic and Main all make a custom piece final sale. Rare Carat publishes no custom exclusion on its 30-day refund, and With Clarity’s answer depends on which of its pages you read.

How Long After Buying an Engagement Ring Can You Return It?

Thirty days from shipment is the standard window at the sellers here that take returns at all, and Rare Carat states it without a custom carve-out. A made-to-order ring can carry a longer one: RockHer advertises forty days on rings built in its own atelier. Custom pieces at the rest have no window whatsoever.

How Can I Design My Own Engagement Ring?

Three routes exist. Configure a stock setting in a free online builder, ask a retailer to modify one of its designs, or hand a jeweler a brief and have it drawn from scratch. Deadline and budget decide: the builder is instant and free to use, the brief takes weeks and carries fees.
