Cobalt is not the only binder. Ren X and colleagues, in The Scientific World Journal in 2014, report fabricating “ultrafine tungsten carbide-nickel (WC-Ni) cemented carbides,” so the metal gluing the grains together can be nickel instead.

Titanium Style, a jewelry technical and retail source rather than an independent metallurgy one, states that “cobalt alloys are a common irritant and may trigger rashes” and that “when worn against the skin, cobalt reacts with human perspiration to form cobalt chloride, which leads to ‘oxidation,’ leaving a tell-tale green stain on the finger.” We report that as Titanium Style’s claim, because we could not open an independent source confirming the cobalt chloride mechanism.
The practical lesson survives the uncertainty. Manly Bands says in 2026 that its tungsten carbide rings “are cobalt-free, which is the common culprit behind skin reactions in lower-quality tungsten rings,” while another of its own pages says “our tungsten is NOT nickel-free.” If a seller’s two pages disagree about the binder, the listing is not where this gets settled.
What Nobody Can Source About Tungsten Tarnishing

Kim YY and colleagues, in the Journal of Korean Medical Science in 2008, found that “the 14 K gold earrings coated with white gold leached Ni in the artificial sweat unexpectedly,” concluding that “even gold plating cannot prevent Ni from being released.” GIA, separately, says rhodium plating wears away and needs redoing.
