A listing that says only “titanium” has not told you which titanium. The grade is the one specification almost nobody publishes, and the one that changes what the metal does.

Aircraft Grade and Aerospace Grade Are Not Grades

“Aircraft grade” and “aerospace grade” are marketing phrases. Neither names a number, an alloy or a standard, and neither can be checked. Manly Bands writes “Our Aircraft Grade Titanium is your blank canvas.” Element Ring Co writes that “The Spacewalker is made from Aerospace grade titanium, carbon fiber, and two-tone white and blue resin.” A real grade designation looks like Titanium Style’s own labels: 6/4, 6/6/2 and CP. The One Seller That Lets You Choose, and Stamps It

Titanium Style is the only seller read for this page that puts the grade in the buyer’s hands. Its order form offers “6/4 (Aircraft grade)”, “6/6/2 (hardest grade)” at a surcharge, and “CP (basic grade, Ti-999)”, and the seller publishes what is in each. It describes Ti-6/4 as “90% titanium, 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium” with “a tensile strength of up to 150,000 psi”, and its “Extra-hard titanium (6Al/6V/2Sn)” at up to 180,000 psi. Then the part that survives the sale: “All of our rings are hallmarked (stamped) with their titanium grade and karat mark.” A hallmark is the difference between a claim and a record.

Grade 4 or Airplane Grade: One Page, Two Answers

Northern Royal says the Rambler is “Made from Grade 4 titanium, the strongest commercially pure titanium around.” Further down the same page, the specifications list says “Airplane Grade Titanium.” Those two labels are not interchangeable, and we will not correct the seller or decide which one describes the ring you would receive. Grade 4 is commercially pure titanium, while the alloy usually meant by aircraft language is a different material. Brilliant Earth answers the question flatly on the Merle Black listing: the ring “cannot be resized due to its titanium construction”, and it offers a free exchange within 60 days instead. Northern Royal takes the opposite side and draws the contrast itself, selling free resizing on its titanium bands while describing “alternative metals like tungsten, which cannot be resized.” Larson Jewelers manages both positions at once: a product page that promises cover by “Thorsten’s lifetime warranty and sizing exchange”, and a titanium collection page that says “resizing titanium wedding bands is difficult” and that “titanium does not offer the same flexibility as more traditional precious metals.”

What GIA Says, and Why We Lead With It

GIA sells no rings, which is the whole reason its answer is the one to lead with. Its everyday wear table lists titanium as “limited to half a size”, against “yes, up to 2 sizes” for gold and sterling silver, and it gives the reason plainly: “due to the metal’s hardness, resizing a titanium ring can be challenging if your finger size changes over time.” Read half a size as a margin rather than a promise, and one narrower than a finger changes across a marriage. Resizing, Exchange and Remake Are Three Different Promises

Sellers use these three words as if they meant one thing. Resizing is a bench adjustment to the ring you own. An exchange, including a free sizing kit, is a different ring in a different size. A remake is a new ring built from scratch. What the Sellers Say, and What They Leave Out

Larson Jewelers calls the SENTINEL “Black Titanium Construction” with “a matte black finish”, and never says whether that color is anodized, coated or heat treated, or whether it wears. Northern Royal is equally silent about its own all-black band. The one seller that explains its method is Staghead Designs, whose fire-treated band carries its own caution: “While we do our best to get a consistent color with our heat-treated rings, there will be some variation in color.” No source we could open publishes how long an anodized, plated or heat-treated titanium finish lasts, so we publish no figure.

The Only Part of a Titanium Ring That Can Change

GIA says bare titanium “does not tarnish or corrode, and its natural gray color remains consistent without fading.” Total Materia explains the mechanism: the oxide film forms by itself and “can generally heal itself instantaneously if at least traces of oxygen or water are present.” A color is a layer sitting on top of that film, so on a black ring the color is the only part whose appearance can change. Gardiner and colleagues, writing in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine in 2013, report that emergency physicians “may have difficulty removing modern rings made of hard metals such as titanium and tungsten carbide”, and that those metals are “exceptionally difficult or impossible to remove using standard ring cutters.” Salibi and Morritt, in the Emergency Medicine Journal in 2015, describe a case in which arm elevation, finger lubrication and a regular ring cutter all failed, and staff “cut the titanium ring successfully using a pair of bolt cutters.” The ring came off. This is not a scare. It is the reason the sizing policy belongs in the buying decision: the easy fix happens at the order form, not in an emergency department.
