The One Number That Differs

Karat counts parts in 24, and it is the only fixed difference between the two. Total Materia (2009) sets it out: “14K gold: 58.3% pure gold (14 parts gold, 10 parts other metals) 10K gold: 41.7% pure gold (10 parts gold, 14 parts other metals).” As fineness that is 583.3 and 416.7, and GIA (2015) gives the American version as “14K (583 parts pure gold and 417 parts other metals).”

Published tables disagree at the top of the scale. DermNet writes that “24 karat (pure gold) contains 99.9% gold (plus 0.1% other metal)”, while Total Materia lists pure gold at 1000 and 100. We report both as published rather than averaging them.

What Changes When You Trade Gold for Alloy

Everything downstream, the color, the working properties and what touches your skin, follows from how much of the ring is not gold: 14 parts in 24 at 10K, 10 parts at 14K. Total Materia (2009) writes that “Copper, the only other naturally colored pure metal, produces redder hues when added to gold. Silver, zinc, and other metals create progressively paler colors. Lower karat alloys permit a broader spectrum of colors due to higher proportions of alloying elements.” A lower karat has more room in the recipe, and what the refiner puts there is what you wear every day.

What Does Not Change

Both karats are solid gold throughout rather than a plating, and the guides treat a piece “composed throughout of an alloy of gold” as a category apart from plated goods. Both behave like gold: GIA (2025) states that “Gold is resistant to tarnish and corrosion, maintaining its luster over time. However, gold rings benefit from regular polishing to keep their shine.”

The claim that 10 karat is the legal minimum for something to be sold as gold in the United States is one we could not verify, and what follows is what the federal text we read does and does not say. We read the FTC’s Jewelry Guides at 16 CFR 23.3 and the National Stamping Act at 15 U.S.C. 295 and 297.

What the FTC Jewelry Guides Actually Say

The rule the regulation states is about what must sit immediately before the word gold, not about a floor. 16 CFR 23.3(c)(1) reads: “An industry product or part thereof, composed throughout of an alloy of gold may be marked and described as ‘Gold’ when such word ‘Gold,’ wherever appearing, is immediately preceded by a correct designation of the karat fineness of the alloy… (for example, ‘14 Karat Gold,’ ‘14 K. Gold,’ ‘14 Kt. Gold,’ ‘9 Karat Gold,’ or ‘9 Kt. Gold’).” The regulation’s own list of acceptable marks therefore includes “9 Karat Gold” and “9 Kt. Gold”. Reading that section, we found no karat floor for solid gold anywhere in it. What it does police is the bare word: “the word ‘Gold’ or any abbreviation, without qualification… which is not composed throughout of fine (24 karat) gold.”

Where the 10 Karat Floor Really Applies

The number 10 does appear in this section, in the rules for plated goods. Subsections (c)(2) and (c)(3) describe “a plating of gold alloy of not less than 10 karat fineness… may be marked or described as ‘Gold Plate,’ ‘Gold Plated’”, and an “electroplating of gold, or of a gold alloy of not less than 10 karat fineness, which is of reasonable durability and has a minimum thickness throughout equivalent to 0.175 microns… may be marked or described as ‘Gold Plate,’ ‘Gold Plated,’ ‘Gold Electroplate’.” A plated item must also be qualified “to indicate that the product or part is only surface-plated.” Our reading is that this plating requirement is the likeliest origin of the folk rule, being the one place a 10 karat minimum is written down.

What We Looked For and Did Not Find

We looked for a state statute setting a minimum karat for solid gold and did not find one, which is not the same as saying none exists: it means we did not find one. We also looked for a federal provision setting such a floor and did not find one in the sections we read. The only proposal we located was a bill introduced in Congress in 1977, which was never enacted; we captured no verbatim quote from it, so we describe nothing of its contents. Nor can we tell you these guides are the only law that could bear on the question. An absence of a rule in a text we read is not a rule.

What This Means When You Shop

What is regulated at the counter is the mark, not a folk rule about a minimum karat. The guides describe how the karat designation must sit against the word gold, the National Stamping Act sets a tolerance on how far the metal may fall below that mark, and 15 U.S.C. 297 requires a name or registered trademark near the stamp.

What the Karat Stamp Means, and How Exact It Has to Be

A karat mark is regulated, and the federal text sets both what must appear beside it and how far the metal may sit from what it claims. Three things are worth knowing.

Parts per 24 and Parts per Thousand

You will see one of two notations, and they say the same thing. Total Materia’s fineness table gives the correspondence: “Gold alloys 18 750 75 14 583.3 58.3 10 416.7 41.67 9 375 37.5.” A ring stamped 417 claims what one stamped 10K claims. The guides also ask sellers not to use one word loosely: “when the composition of such a product is 14 karat gold alloy, it should not be described or marked as either ‘14 Kt. Solid Gold’ or as ‘Solid 14 Kt. Gold.’”

How Close to 10K Does 10K Have to Be

Fineness carries a legal tolerance, and it is small. The FTC’s footnote to Part 23 states: “Under the National Stamping Act, articles or parts made of gold or of gold alloy that contain no solder have a permissible tolerance of three parts per thousand. If the part tested contains solder, the permissible tolerance is seven parts per thousand.” 15 U.S.C. 295 puts it the same way: “the actual fineness of such gold or alloy shall not be less by more than three one-thousandth parts than the fineness indicated by the mark stamped.” That is a tolerance on gold content against the stamp, and nothing else.

The Trademark Next to the Stamp

The quality mark does not travel alone. Under 15 U.S.C. 297, whoever applies a gold quality mark to an article moving in commerce must also “Apply or cause to be applied to that article a trademark of such persons, which has been duly registered… or the name of such person… in a position as close as possible to that quality mark or stamp.” So a karat number with nothing beside it is worth a question about who made the ring. That is a question, not a counterfeit test.

Put the same yellow recipe at two karats and the 10K version reads paler than the 14K one, because a larger share of the metal is not gold, per Total Materia. It is what shoppers notice first.

Why 10K Reads Paler

The color is set by what fills the non-gold portion, and Total Materia (2009) writes that “Silver, zinc, and other metals create progressively paler colors”, while copper “produces redder hues when added to gold.” With 14 parts in 24 open to the alloy rather than 10, a 10K yellow has more room for silver and zinc to dilute the color, and equally more room for copper to push it warmer. No source we hold gives a measured color coordinate for either karat, so nobody can say in numbers how much paler 10K looks.

10K vs 14K White Gold

At the white gold counter the plating question outruns the karat question. Why Alloy Metals Add Hardness

GIA (2025) writes that “Higher karat gold, such as 24k, is the purest and softest, making it more prone to scratches and dents… For everyday wear, 14k and 18k gold, which are alloyed with other metals for increased strength, are more suitable.” Note which karats that names: 14k and 18k, not 10k, so it is no endorsement of 10K. The brake on the simple story comes from Total Materia (2009): “Reducing gold content from 24K to 18K substantially increases strength and hardness. However, further reduction below 18K yields diminishing returns in mechanical property enhancement.” Brilliant Earth, the retailer, writes that “14K gold generally proves more durable due to its higher alloy content”, a claim rather than a measurement.

What the Published Measurements Show, and Which Karats They Cover

Raykhtsaum and Agarwal (2009), writing for Sigmund Cohn Corp., report that for 14 karat “we have selected eight alloy compositions all containing approximately 3% zinc with the gold fixed at 58.5%”, with annealed values of 135, 150, 160, 175, 175, 170, 140 and 100 HV and aged values from 110 up to 260 HV. The spread is the point: at one karat, the hardest annealed sample is about three quarters harder than the softest. These are polished laboratory samples, so a band’s profile and finish are not in them, and we hold no 10K figure at all.

Why There Is No Mohs Number for a Gold Alloy

Mohs is a mineral scale, and the only Mohs value we hold for gold is WebElements’ “Gold: Mineral hardness: 2.5 (no units)”, which describes pure gold as an element and not any ring alloy. A Mohs number for 10K or 14K is something we could not find in a source. Watch out too for density standing in for hardness: the Royal Society of Chemistry lists gold’s “Density (g cm-3) 19.3”, again the pure element, and density is not hardness.

GIA (2025) puts 14k and 18k gold forward for everyday wear because they are “alloyed with other metals for increased strength”, and says gold “is resistant to tarnish and corrosion, maintaining its luster over time” while benefiting from polishing. No source we read publishes a wear rate or a service life by karat, so anyone quoting years is quoting nobody. For hazards rather than slow wear, see a band that survives hard daily use.

Resizing, Engraving and Repair

Gold’s advantage over the hard alternatives is that a jeweler can work it later. GIA (2025) writes that “gold rings can be resized if necessary, offering flexibility for long-term wear”, and contrasts tungsten, where “due to their brittleness, tungsten rings cannot be resized”. Our sources publish no karat-specific limit on resizing or engraving, so we publish none; a heavily engraved band is a question for the bench jeweler.

Where the Dermatology Advice Draws Its Lines

DermNet (2023) writes that “‘Hypoallergenic’ stainless steel, solid gold (12 carat or more), and silver jewellery should be safe. Nine-carat gold and white gold contain nickel.” The distinction matters: DermNet names nine-carat gold and white gold as containing nickel, and it does not say that 10-karat gold contains nickel. What it sets is a threshold, 12 carat, which 10 karat falls below and 14 karat clears. We do not turn a threshold into a prediction.

The American Academy of Dermatology draws its line higher. It notes that “it is estimated that more than 18 percent of people in North America are allergic to nickel”, and advises those who are to “only wear jewelry that is nickel-free, hypoallergenic, or made from metals such as… 18-, 22-, or 24-karat yellow gold, pure sterling silver, or platinum.” Neither karat here meets that floor, and this is advice for people who already have a nickel allergy.

White Gold Is a Separate Question

GIA (2015) writes that “White gold is made by alloying (mixing) gold with nickel or palladium, copper and zinc” and that “People allergic to nickel should avoid white gold alloyed with this metal.” The karat number will not tell you which was used, so ask.
