How to Read the Table
Three rules make the table readable, and the first matters most. A published hardness or density value describes a pure element, a compound, or a laboratory test alloy, never a finished ring, so these figures rank materials rather than predict what one band will do on your hand. Second, density is not hardness: platinum is the densest metal here and among the softest on the Mohs scale, so a heavy ring is not automatically a tough one. Third, the hardness column labels its scale, because Mohs and Vickers are not interchangeable and a Vickers number is not a bigger Mohs number.
Why Half the Table Says Not Published
The blank-looking cells are the finding, not an apology. No published hardness figure exists for jewelry cobalt chrome, and pure cobalt’s density is the element rather than the alloy anyone wears. No named medical source addresses wearing a cobalt chrome ring or a metallic zirconium ring. No named authority publishes a hardness, density or resizing verdict for stainless steel jewelry, even though three medical bodies name it as safe for sensitive skin. Those gaps matter commercially, because they are exactly the cells product pages fill in most confidently: a decisive hardness number for cobalt chrome on a listing has no public source behind it.
The Four Questions That Decide It
Four published criteria decide a wedding band, and they point at four different metals, which is why no honest page names one winner.
How Hard Is It, and Can It Break?
Scratch resistance and toughness are separate properties, and the leader on one usually trails on the other. Tungsten carbide scores Mohs 8 to 9 and cannot be cut with conventional ring cutters (Quinto and colleagues, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, 2025), and the same study needed a mean 3.7 kN of diametral compression to fracture those rings: hardness and brittleness arrived together, on real rings. Platinum is Mohs 3.5 as a pure element (WebElements, 2026), yet Ganoksin describes it as displacing metal rather than losing it when scratched. Brilliant Earth makes the practical point that mixing metals means more maintenance, although its own sentence explains that by calling platinum denser than gold. Can It Be Resized, and Can It Be Cut Off?
GIA is the only named authority publishing a resizing verdict per metal, and it covers five of the thirteen here: gold and sterling silver up to two sizes, platinum expensive to resize, titanium limited to half a size, tungsten no, because of its brittleness. Two retailers disagree on titanium: Brilliant Earth, 2026, says it generally cannot be resized, and Staghead Designs says such metals need a full remake. That disagreement stands; averaging sources that measured nothing would invent a third answer. Emergency removal comes only from the medical literature: Gardiner and colleagues, 2013, found titanium and tungsten carbide exceptionally difficult or impossible to remove with standard ring cutters, and one constricted titanium ring needed bolt cutters from a surgical theater (Salibi and Morritt, 2015). Will Your Skin React?
Three named medical bodies publish lists of metals they consider safe for nickel allergy, and those lists are short. The American Academy of Dermatology, which estimates more than 18 percent of people in North America are allergic to nickel, names surgical-grade stainless steel, 18, 22 and 24 karat yellow gold, pure sterling silver and platinum. DermNet gives the same four and says to assume nickel in anything outside them; Mayo Clinic, 2025, adds titanium. They disagree on gold: the AAD’s floor is 18 karat and DermNet’s nickel page says 12 carat or more, so 14K sits between two named authorities. How Heavy Will It Feel?
Weight is preference, not quality, and the one property here you can judge yourself in a store. The Royal Society of Chemistry gives the pure elements, lightest to heaviest: titanium 4.506, zirconium 6.52, cobalt 8.86, silver 10.5, palladium 12.0, tantalum 16.4, gold 19.3 and platinum 21.5 g/cm3. Then the correction nobody else makes: the International Tungsten Industry Association puts tungsten at 19.25 g/cm3, and every retailer table in this category prints that as the weight of a tungsten ring. It is not. A ring is cemented carbide, and Wang and colleagues, 2026, measured a commercial WC-6Co sample at 14.9 g/cm3, roughly a quarter lighter: the difference between the element and the product. The Precious Metals
These are the metals with centuries of bench practice behind them, which in day-to-day terms mostly means they can be repaired.
14K and 18K Gold
Gold is sold by karat: in the US, 14K is 583 parts pure gold and 417 parts other metals, and 18K is 750 and 250, per GIA, 2015. The FTC requires the karat fineness immediately before the word gold, so an unqualified gold stamp means 24 karat. The number worth knowing is what alloying buys: Raykhtsaum and Agarwal, 2009, measured eight 14K test alloys at 100 to 175 HV annealed and up to 260 HV after age hardening, against pure gold at 20 HV annealed (Total Materia, 2009) and Mohs 2.5, which is what annoys a gold ring’s owner in ten years. Platinum
Platinum is the densest metal here and among the softest, which is why those two columns must be read separately. The FTC reserves the unqualified word platinum for 950 parts per thousand, and Stuller names Pt950 with ruthenium as the most widely used US jewelry alloy. The Royal Society of Chemistry puts the pure element at 21.5 g/cm3 and WebElements at Mohs 3.5. What separates it is how it wears: Ganoksin states platinum scratches by displacement with no metal loss, so engravings do not fade and shanks last for generations. Palladium and Sterling Silver
These are the two precious options where the published evidence runs against the usual sales pitch. Total Materia records palladium as a historical substitute for platinum, with an extraordinary capacity to absorb hydrogen, and the Royal Society of Chemistry puts it at 12.0 g/cm3. These are the metals that cannot be repaired, which is the trade you make for what they can survive.
Tungsten Carbide
A tungsten ring is not tungsten. It is cemented carbide, which the International Tungsten Industry Association describes as a tungsten carbide cobalt alloy, and Ren and colleagues, 2014, document nickel-bound versions too. The numbers are the best sourced here: Mohs 8 to 9 measured on rings, a mean fracture force of 3.7 kilonewtons (Quinto and colleagues, 2025), and a measured WC-6Co density of 14.9 g/cm3 rather than the element’s 19.25. Titanium
Titanium is the lightest metal here at 4.506 g/cm3 for the pure element (Royal Society of Chemistry), and GIA, 2025, says it does not tarnish or corrode and its gray color stays consistent. Total Materia gives the mechanism: a TiO2 film that forms spontaneously on fresh metal and heals itself where oxygen or water are present. WebElements gives the pure element Mohs 6.0, and a Brazilian Dental Journal casting study measured cast commercially pure titanium at roughly 200 to 260 VHN and cast Ti-6Al-4V at 341 to 369 VHN, on castings rather than rings. Cobalt Chrome and Ceramic
Cobalt chrome is the emptiest row in the table, and the emptiness is the story: no published hardness figure, no named authority on resizing, no medical source about wearing one. The nearest peer-reviewed evidence, Chen in Arthroplasty, 2023, concerns cobalt-chromium orthopedic implants inside bone, not a band on skin, and says only that such implants are not universally inert. Patrick Adair Designs states its own cobalt chrome alloy is nickel free, a maker’s claim about its own product. Ceramic rings are zirconia, ZrO2, which Lin, Yin and Mo, 2021, put at 1,200 Vickers with 900 to 1,200 MPa bending strength and the European Journal of Dentistry, 2025, puts at Mohs 8, both on dental zirconia.
Stainless Steel, Zirconium and Tantalum
The cheapest metal here carries the best-sourced skin record on the page and the worst-sourced everything else. The AAD names surgical-grade stainless steel, DermNet says it does not usually cause dermatitis unless nickel plated, Mayo Clinic names it, and Nixon and colleagues, 2018, explain that many nickel-containing stainless steels release too little nickel to sensitize. Is platinum or tungsten stronger?
Two different questions again. Tungsten carbide is Mohs 8 to 9 against platinum’s 3.5 as a pure element, so it resists scratches far better. Platinum displaces metal without losing it when scratched, per Ganoksin, while the tungsten study measured a fracture point platinum does not have.
Is cobalt a toxic metal?
That cannot be answered about rings from the published evidence. Cobalt is a recognized contact allergen, positive in 9.2 percent of 3,056 patients in NACDG patch testing (Houle and colleagues, 2025), and Chen, 2023, documents allergic reactions to cobalt-chromium implants inside bone. Neither studied a cobalt chrome ring worn on skin.
Does titanium tarnish like silver?
No. GIA, 2025, states titanium does not tarnish or corrode and its gray color remains consistent without fading, which Total Materia attributes to a self-healing TiO2 surface film. GIA’s own table says the opposite of sterling silver, which may need polishing to remove tarnish if it is not worn often.
