Tungsten carbide is naturally light gray, and Larson Jewelers explains that its black tungsten rings are coated: “The black material is a titanium alloy coating that is applied to the surface of the ring,” by a process the company calls physical vapor deposition. Larson adds that the coating “is not as scratch resistant as the tungsten ring itself,” and offers to refinish black rings for a fee. Helzberg’s black cobalt band states its method in its name, “Black Ion-Plated Cobalt.” The listing does not say how long the plating lasts or what the store does when it wears, so ask before buying.
Black All the Way Through: Ceramic
Ceramic is the one common black band material where the seller states the color is the material. Larson says its black ceramic “is NOT a coating like black tungsten,” and on its OLIVIA women’s band that “Black ceramic is not plated like black tungsten, which means the black color will never fade.” That is the seller’s claim, and no seller we read publishes a test behind it. What ceramic trades for its color is resizing: Brilliant Earth lists ceramic with tungsten and titanium among rings that may not be fully resized. An Oxide of the Metal: Black Zirconium
Revolution Jewelry, a maker of black zirconium rings, describes the process: “When Zirconium is oxidized through a controlled heating process, a tough oxide layer forms on the surface and turns it dark.” It contrasts that layer with platings: rhodium plating and oxidized silver “sit on top of the metal and can wear through,” while the oxide “is part of the metal itself and is far more durable.” The same page adds that “the oxidized layer is not impervious to scratching.” The Lashbrook band at Helzberg names its metal only as zirconium, so how it is darkened is the maker’s general account, not a statement on that listing.
Black Stones: Natural or Treated Diamonds
A band set with black diamonds gets its color from the stones, and GIA is direct about them: “Many black diamonds used in jewelry and engagement rings today have been treated to achieve their dark color,” and its treatments guide adds that “most black diamonds are treated.” GIA issues reports for diamonds with stable treatments such as irradiation and annealing, and a GIA report “can confirm whether the diamond’s color is natural or the result of treatment.” Shane Co.’s Trent listing states that its 16 black diamonds are natural. A wrong size on a hard black band is solved by a new ring, not a jeweler’s saw.
